Statement Of The Spokesman Of The Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Of Turkeyin Response To A Question , 22.12.2008

Special Representative of the Secretary General for Sudan, Ashraf Qazi paid a visit to Turkey on 16-17 December 2008 to hold consultations on Sudan. Following the consultations with Amb. Ünal Çeviköz, Deputy Undersecretary for Political Affairs, Special Representative Qazi was also received by H.E. Abdullah Gül, President of the Republic of Turkey and H.E. Ali Babacan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey.

Turkey attaches great importance to the independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Sudan. With this understanding, Turkey remains committed to cooperating with the international community within her means in order to contribute to peace, stability and prosperity of the Sudan.

Within this framework, Turkey is convinced of the importance of abiding to the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which constitutes a significant framework for peace and stability in Sudan, by all parties concerned and expects the parties to approach with caution to situations that may harm the atmosphere of confidence between parties. With this understanding, Turkey is pleased of the activities and the central role of the UN Mission in Southern Sudan.

Likewise, in relation to the crisis in Darfur, Turkey expects all parties to manifest more willingness in ensuring peace in the region.

Enjoying common historical and cultural ties with Sudan, Turkey is supporting this country and its brotherly people on humanitarian matters.

As a new non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and a strategic partner of the African Union, Turkey will continue to pay special attention to the regional issues including developments in Africa.
