Statement Of The Spokesman Of The Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Of Turkey In Response To A Question , 19.09.2009
Question: What do you think about the judgement of the European Court of Human Rights on Varnava case, which was announced today.
Answer: The European Court of Human Rights has today found Turkey responsible and awarded compensation in Varnava and others case, lodged by the relatives of the 9 Greek Cypriots who are deemed missing since the 1974 Peace Operation.
It is evident that the ECtHR failed to take Turkish views into consideration in this case. The same Court, however, had found inadmissable the similar applications lodged by the relatives of Turkish Cypriot missing persons against the Greek Cypriot Administration, without even communicating them to the respondant party. Therefore, this judgment is incoherent with its previous decisions on the issue of missing persons in Cyprus.
Turkey expects ECtHR to be coherent in its judgements.
